The common hurdle always has been about quantities, and initial costs, making it prohibitive to print your own design onto any fabric, unless you plan to print thousands of yards, in the first run.
Most screen and other forms of printing houses would require you to print a minimum of 1000 or more yards per print, per colorway, making it impossible to print short runs, or try out a particular print before you commit to it.

Digital printing has changed all of that. Digital printing involves using a large inkjet printer, made especially for printing onto fabric, and the process has simplified the printing of sampling runs, and smaller quantities.
The designs are basically created as a high-quality file, and then printed onto treated fabric, which could be cotton or other natural fibers, or a polyester blend.
The design is simply printed onto the fabric, without the need for a minimum amount of yards, thereby reducing the minimum quantity down to 5 yards or even 1 yard at times.
